Gentle, sensitive and distinguished, the llama moves at the children's rhythm without ever jostling them. Very comfortable on mountain paths, he is not trained to carry children, however, he takes care of bags and picnics (maximum 20 kg).
Originally from South America, they are camelids (camel family), they do not have hooves like donkeys and ponies, but 2 nails and a foot pad.
The llama eats grass, but it also loves tree leaves, roots, seeds and thorn trees.
The llama family includes 4 different animals; the llama and the alpaca which are domestic animals, while the guanaco and the vicuña are wild species not found in Europe.
The llama is the largest, measuring up to 1.25 m at the withers and weighing 120 to 180 kilos. The color of its wool can be very varied and the abundance of its fleece depends on its variety. Serge is a “wool” llama and his hair can reach 25 cm long, so every spring, for his comfort, he is clipped!
Its cousin, the alpaca, is smaller and the production of its hair ranks it among the producers of noble fibers. The llama has banana-shaped ears, those of the alpaca are small and straight.
Cry of the llama: the llama expresses itself through a whole range of sounds, which can translate sadness, warning against a supposed danger, hostility towards a friend.
The llama spits in its defense (very rarely on humans, but more often on its friends). This spit consists, in serious cases, of viscous gastric regurgitation (spinach with a strong odor!), more frequently, of a sort of drool that he projects onto the object of his anger.
The female llama is called the lamate. The “cria”, the baby, weighs 10 kilos at birth, but he is able to follow his mother within the hour that follows. It becomes independent around the 5th month and will be able to reproduce after 3 years.
